Monthly round-up with Trevor Hancock, RD1 Livestock Manager
May 2012
What a great season it has been. Prices for dairy cattle, beef, sheep and wool were all strong most of the year. It's no secret that when the grass grows, production and values all remain at very high levels.
Dairy
Dairy herd sales have slowed as many farmers have committed to purchase and currently the selection process is in full swing. Make sure you have completed the following checklist:
- Arrange transport for your livestock as there are large numbers on the move
- Get payment arrangements in place, on due dates, to avoid late payment of interest charges. At the high prices we've experienced this season, interest charged will be significant for late payments
- Arrange inspections within the last fortnight prior to trucking to eliminate any cows being transported that are not required
- Get transfer cards for the new purchaser to receive on delivery
- Prepare your cows for delivery; they deserve to be treated well.

Life after farming?

Have you considered a career as a livestock agent? Many of our agents were dairy farmers and are happy with their new career choice. RD1 offers a great career path, networking opportunities and the support of 24 experienced agents. And we are considering additional agents in specific locations.
If you're motivated, enjoy the company of others and are passionate about the rural industry, why not consider it? A dairy farming background, experience in off farm activities in primarily rural related programmes, public presentations, etc are all factors that will contribute to your effectiveness as a livestock agent.
