Keeping your horse warm and dry
Article from 'Straight from the Horse's Mouth' - May 2008
Nearly all of us do it, and that is over cover our horses! We think we are doing them a favour, but the truth is your horse is better off to be a little cool than too hot.
It is important to keep your horse warm and dry over winter so they are not burning vital energy to keep warm and therefore losing condition. But bear in mind you don't want your horse to be hot and clammy during the day, as this can also lead to weight loss and skin conditions.
If possible, a heavier rug at night with a lighter one underneath is ideal, so in the morning you just simply pull the top rug off for the day and place back on in the evening.
The most important functions of a winter rug are to keep the rain off and block out the wind. It is a very good idea at the end of every winter to give your cover a good clean and re-waterproof it with a good waterproofing agent. Not only will this help fulfil the primary function of helping to keep the cover waterproof but it will also lengthen the life expectancy of your cover, helping to prevent the cover from rotting.
There are several different waterproofing agents so make sure you get the correct type for the cover you use. Canvas and synthetic covers have different waterproofing requirements. Fortunately, RD1 can provide a waterproofing solution for both cover types.
Finally, if you are pulling out last season's winter rugs make sure you thoroughly check the stitching, especially in high stress areas such as leg straps and back clips. If anything looks like it needs repairing, get it done straight away. This way you'll ensure your horse is safe and avoid a costly repair bill to your cover later down the track.
