With spring just around the corner and many horse owners getting organised for the competitive season ahead, now is a great time to assess your horse's body condition and feeding regime.

RD1 has sourced some helpful tips from Gretel Webber, Equine Specialist at NRM, to help with preparation for the season ahead.

Horses that are competing and are out and about regularly, will benefit from a premium performance feed, and with spring being a time when horses can feel 'a little too good' a non-heating feed is usually most popular.

Although a relative new comer to the NRM range of horse feeds, Low GI Sport has been a popular addition. Being a Low Glycaemic feed with the ingredients derived primarily from fat and fi bre, it incorporates a unique combination of being a relatively high calorie feed, but providing this in a 'cool energy' form. As a semi-concentrate, it means that slightly lower intakes are required to achieve the same intake of key nutrients than many conventional full feeds.

Another great addition to the winter/spring feeding regime is Equi-Jewel, a high fat stabilised rice bran supplement. With 20% fat, it provides a concentrated source of 'cool' energy, great for achieving rapid gain in condition. As a supplement it is added into your existing ration. As well as a great fattening supplement it has the added benefit, due to its high fat content, of achieving superior coat condition, so is a must for those horses that are out competing early in the season.
