Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)
Provided by Dow AgroSciences
Pennyroyal is a perennial weed that is often found in damp pastures. Its flowers are purple and will usually appear in late summer (January to March).
(Mentha pulegium)
Treating pennyroyal late in the growth stage seems to give the best results. ie: When it is fully vegetative through until it is flowering (November to February).
This weed has a very distinctive 'minty' smell when the leaves are crushed between your fingers - which can be an easy method of positive identification.
How to control Pennyroyal
Broadcast spraying:
- In established pastures 5-6L/ha 2,4-D Amine herbicide is the suggested treatment. This will give approximately 60 - 70% control. It has also been found that Pasture Kleen* Xtra herbicide applied at 4-5L/ha is equally effective.
- Poor results are obtained if MCPA herbicide is used.
- o clover selective option is available. i.e. MCPB, Select* and Preside* herbicides are ineffective against pennyroyal.
Spot treatment:
Tordon Brushkiller will provide good control when applied through a knapsack as a spot treatment. The standard use rate for a knapsack of 6ml/L should be used for both products. No additional wetter is required.
